Speaking Through The Music What teen today doesn’t like music? There’s so much of it out there, who can resist? Whether your favorite genre is pop, rap, funk, punk, old school, new school, new age, rock, country, techno, gospel, sing-along, classical, opera, heavy metal, acoustic, or contemporary there’s bound to be something that makes your ear drums “water”. “Well, I’m a Christian, I can’t listen to any of that.”, is the response most “uneducated” believers give. What they or you don’t know is there’s also an explosion of Christian bands all over the world in addition to the large population of secular music. Each genre is jam packed with all sorts of “Jesus Freaks” that can’t wait to share God’s message through song to the world. Take heavy metal for example. I bet almost any adult in today’s world would say that you can’t praise God with heavy metal music. Demon Hunter (a heavy metal Christian band) would disagree. From evolution to criticizing the devil, they praise God on an amazing level of emotion. Which brings us to our next bridge. Emotion is how much care about something. It could be anything. A book, a car, a friend, God, everything is subject to emotion. So what about music. Does loud music equal heathen kids? Does an electric guitar and heavy bass run hand and hand with Lucifer? Heck no! The louder the music the more screaming during the song the head banging and the jumping around like a maniac are all ways to express emotion, not insanity. And, once, again on heavy metal, so what if it sounds “scary and evil”. Don’t stereotype, check the lyrics, you could be surprised by the message the band is sending out. And, in the case of Christian music, God can speak through others. God’s message isn’t hidden in the music or the bible, so why hide it within yourself? Live for God or die trying was Paul’s attitude. Can’t we share in his desperation to serve?!
