A Recon Worth Remembering God’s hand is in all things with his children, but they sometime force his children to rely on him. May 31, 2005 I had one experience which called for my total reliance on God. For some it was a normal school day during a normal school week at the end of a normal school year, but for me it was a day of many activities. I was planning on biking to school, but do to my serious case of senioritis I slept in. The rest of the school day involved taking a few tests, but for the most part relaxing while graduation crept closer and closer. However, the real action began after school. It was Tuesday so I had guitar lessons at four thirty and I need to mow the grass before then. Naturally, I was reluctant to go home and do chores so I managed to put it off until time to leave for lessons. After arriving a few minutes late and I went into practice until five o’clock. Then, I left only to site through thirty minutes of traffic. While sitting in the traffic I was oblivious to the fact that a crazy evening was brewing. I missed my exit twice (after turning around for another try) because of the traffic and I was lured to Wal-Mart for some video game. My unspoken intentions though, were to put off mowing some more. When I finally arrived home at six I took a bathroom break and got to mowing. I was done by seven thirty and finally decided to give Evan a call. We had a camping trip planned and had had it for a month at least so I expected him to be ready. Much to my dismal his dad answered and told me that he had went on a balloon flight with Colin. In the weeks/days leading up to this point I had given Evan every possible reminder. Still, he forgot and or blew me off. For thirty more minutes I angrily threw my gear together and called Evan every two minutes through Colin’s cell (no answer though). Finally, after leaving several messages I called one more time to give a last chance, but still there was no answer. By this time I was on the road heading to Arcadia with or without him. As intrigued as I was about spending one night in the wilderness a million miles from civilization by myself I opted to call my friend Andrew Jackson. Luckily, he was home and after a little resistance from his mother he was allowed to come. When we finally arrived in Arcadia and stopped at our site it was nine o’clock (dark!). By the light of a dying flashlight we set up camp and in pitch black we lit the fire. After igniting the little wood I had another problem arose. We didn’t have any wood! Luckily we found just enough to get us through the night! Overall, a learning experience, but a painful truth was learned in addition to needing to rely of God. Friends aren’t perfect as Jesus was and as a result will let you down sometimes.
